Obit; Jan. 21, 1916 issue of The Elgin Daily News.
Alonzo A. Jones, one of Elgin's oldest residents and a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home, 932 Augusta avenue, at 5 o'clock this morning following an attack of the grip.
Mr. Jones was 95 years, three months and twenty-six days old.  he had been married more than sixty years.  Twenty-one years ago he came to this city and had made his home here since that time.
Mr. Jones credited his long life to his regular habits.  He always kept the most regular hours, went to bed early and arose early in the morning, never missed his three meals a day and was a total abstainer from tobacco and liquor.  Although he was within five years of the century mark he looked no older than a man twenty years his junior.
Alonzo A. Jones was born in Massachusetts, September 24, 1820.  They came to Elgin from Janesville, Wis., having come west in 1855.  During the Civil war Mr. Jones, although over the age limit for volunteers, was attached to the 48th Wisconsin infantry.  He believed that he was the oldest living member of the G.A.R., being a member of Veteran Post, No. 49 of this city.
Because Mrs. Jones is seriously ill with pneumonia the funeral services will be private from the late home Monday morning at 10 o'clock.  The remains will be placed in a vault at Bluff City cemetery.  Friends will please omit flowers.
Mrs. Jones is 85 years of age.  Her sister, Mrs. Margaret Jones, aged 75 years, is caring for her.
Besides his widow, Mr. Jones is survived by a son, Henry Jones, and a daughter, Mrs. john Tweedy.  Mrs. Tweedy recently recovered from an attack of pneumonia.

Article; March 16, 1888 of the Elgin Daily Courier.
A command of the Union Veterans' union was mustered in, last night, with twenty-five charter members.  It is composed of good and true soldiers of the late war of the rebellion, and starts out with good prospects for success.
The command was mustered in by General George W. Eldridge, department commander, of Bloomington.  The following officers were elected by acclaqmation:  Colnel, George H. Knott;, lieutenant-colonel,  Andrew Apple; major, H. Sweet; surgeon, William Dalton; chaplain, Thomas Jones; officer of the day, John Powers; officer of the guard, S.D. Chamberlin; quartermaster, Theo Schroeder; adjutant, D.J. Lynch; sergeant major, John Davenport; quartermaster sergeant, P. Murray; outside sentinel, H.A. Cochran; inside sentinel, E. Kent.
In this order none but veterans who actually served at the front six months and over are eligible, those who know what a soldier's life is: who smelt powder, heard the zip of the bullets, the scream of the shell, lived on hard-tack and sow-belly, and endured the genuine hardships of camp, field and march.  It does not intend to antagonize the G.A.R. in any way.

Death Notice; Dec. 26, 1896 issue of Elgin's Every Saturday.
Thomas Jones died, after a short illness, at his home on North Crystal street, Dec. 18, aged 81 years.  He had served in the regular army before coming to Elgin in 1844, and served through the war of the rebellion in the 50th Illinois infantry.  Seven children survive him, Charles, Susan, and Ida living in Elgin.  His funeral was in charge of Veteran post, G.A.R.

Obit; Oct. 10, 1885 issue of Elgin's Every Saturday.
Early on Tuesday morning the eventful life of Col. Edward Swain Joslyn ceased.  That life, full of bright possibilities, is ended.
Col. Joslyn was born in Nunda Valley, (not Nevada, as no such town exists) some time in June or July, 1827, his family disagreeing as to the date.  In 1838 he came to Illinois, settling near Crystal lake.  He was a student of the Elgin academy in his boyhood.
In 1861 he enlisted, and was captain of Co. A. 7th I.I.V., afterwards being appointed lieutenant colonel of the 36th I. I.V., which position he held until September, 1862, when he retired from the service, returned to Eglin and resumed the practice of law, in which profession he was a brilliant success.  In 1856 he was elected state's attorney of Kane county.  In 1858 he was elected to the city council of Elgin, serving two years.  He was then elected city attorney in 1860, and in 1861 was elected mayor.  This office he resigned in order to go into the army.  After retiring from the army in the fall of 1862, Col. Joslyn was again elected an alderman.  In 1865 he was again elected mayor, and in 1868 and 1869 sat in the council.  In 1870, during m. B. Baldwin's second term as mayor, Col. Joslyn was again elected city attorney.  After one year's service he was again elected a member of the city council, which office he held until 1876.  At the time of his death he was chairman of the district Democratic committee.
In 1854 the deceased was married to Miss Jennie Padelford, a daughter of R. W. Padelford, of this city.  His widow and six children survive him.
During the Buchanan-Freemont campaign Col. Joslyn gave his best energies to the cause of Freemont.  After Freemont's defeat, the colonel allied himself to the "Little Giant", and during the Lincoln-Breckenridge-Douglas campaign he was an ardent supporter of Douglas.
A man of rare eloquence remarkable personal magnetism, an exhaustless fund of general knowledge and a power for argumentative debate, Col. Joslyn as always an interesting speaker.  Had not the evil results of dissipation clouded his life with a mist too deep for his natural abilities to tear away, he would have been one  the foremost men in the northwest.
The funeral occurred Thursday from the home at 1:30 o'clock, and later from the Baptist church.  It was largely attended, forty members of the Kane county bar and the G.A.R. post attending in a body.

   Buried at Elgin City Cemetery.
Re-interred at Bluff City Cemetery when the City Cemetery closed.

Foreman of the Ed Joslyn Hose Co.

Obit; Jan. 22, 1876 issue of the Elgin Advocate.
Marcellus B. Joslyn died at his residence, in this city, on Saturday morning last January 15, of Consumption, aged about thirty-five years.
"Deac," as he was so familiarly called, had resided in this city for a period of twenty years, and was well known to all of our citizens.  "When he first came to his city he was engaged in a printing office and soon became one of the best compositors in the northwest.  He removed to Chicago, and for a time worked for Long John Wentworth, afterwards returning to Elgin where, for six years, he served the American Express company in the capacity of agent, a position which he filled with credit.  In life, he was kind and generous to a fault, and but for the fact that he was his own worst enemy, might have lived to a good old age, an ornament to society and a power for good for the community.  But, like too many other good and noble men, he became a slave to a habit which conquers the best of men who dally with it.
He was a member of Elgin lodge No. 117 A.F. & A.M., and foreman of the Ed. Josly Hose company, and these organizations, together with the other companies of the fire department, and a large number of citizens, attended his funeral, which was held from the Baptist church on Sunday afternoon last.  Rev. Leo M. Woodruff, pastor of the Baptist church, made a few remarks in the church, in which he stated that the deceased had sent for him a few days before his death, with a desire to converse with him in regard to his future welfare, and during the visit "Deac" gave messages of warning, which he desired the reverend gentlemand to make known to those who attended the funeral, for he felt that his days on earth were but few, but expressed himself as being resigned to his fate.  He freely forgave those who had been the means of leding him into the downward path, and begged that they would stop and consider and turn from the evil way in which they were going and not lead any more to where they had led him, and those whom he had influenced he wanted to stop a nd turn from their ways before they found ait too late.  He wanted to live a hundred years, not that he might enjoy life, but that he might go about warning his fellow-men to forsake the habits which were riveting fetters about them which they would soon find it impossible to break, and whcih in the end would lead them to inevitable ruin.  As these words of warning fell from the preacher's lips on the ears of the vast congregation, it seemed like the voice of the dead from beyond the grave speaking of what would be the fate of those who clung to the evil habit.  Mr. Woodruff said it seemed to him that if these men who had dragged the deceased down could have stood by his dying bed and heard the voice of warning and pleading, they would have felt as if they were being arraigned before the very judgment bar of God.
Several beautiful selections, favorites of the deceased were sung by the choir, when the procession, headed by the Bluff City band, marched to the cemetery, in a pitiless rain storm where the Masonic fraternity held their services, and all that was left of M.B. Joslyn was deposited in the grave.
The deceased leves a wife and two children, a boy and a girl, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his departure from earth.

   Buried in Elgin City Cemetery.
Re-interred at Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin, Ill. when the City Cemetery closed.
