VETERAN SAILOR HAS CLOSE CALL IN FALL

     Henry J. Rhodes, 71 Grove avenue, veteran sailor of the Civil war, and Elgin insurance agent, escaped serious injury and probably death this morning when in attempting to run across Grove avenue near DuPage street to see more of an automobile accident, he slipped in the middle of the car tracks.
     The street car bore down on the old sailor and it seemed to bystanders that the man would be struck.   Just before the car reached the spot, Mr. Rhodes managed to clear himself of the tracks.

"Sailor" Rhodes Civil War Hero Succumbs Here

     "Sailor" Rhodes, veteran of the Civil War who escaped death when the U, S. S Paw Paw was blown up, died at his home at 72 Grove avenue at 3:45 o'[clock this morning.
     On account of his illness the old sailor was unable to march in this years Memorial Day parade, wearing the uniform of his Civil War days.   His presence was missed by many.
     Henry J. Rhodes was born at Lacpa, Ill., Feb. 22, 1847.
     When but fourteen years old, he enlisted in the army but was discharged upon the request of his mother after serving a short time.   Not deterred, the youth enlisted in the navy and served thru the entire war, covering himself with glory.
     Fond du Lac, Wis., was the scene of his enlistment.
     He is survived by his wife and four daughters, Mrs. Lillian Miller, of Ludington, Mich., Mrs. Delia Berner and Mrs. Leah Demmin of this city and Mrs. Nellie Fish of Chicago.   Six grandchildren also survive.
     Funeral services will be held in Stoughton, Wis., Tuesday afternoon.   Those wishing to view the remains, may do so at the home on Grove avenue Sunday afternoon.
     The deceased was a member of the Grand Army Post at Madison, Wis., Odd Fellows and the Woodman Lodge at Stoughton, Stoughton papers pleas copy.
