   Moved to Elgin, Ill.
   Listed on the 1900 Federal Census as a 65 year old Merchant from Germany.  He could both read and write and living in Elgin, Ill.

      Casper Schmidt, for many years a well known resident of Elgin and Udina, and native of Germany, died yesterday afternoon, following a protracted illness, aged 76 years.
      Mr. Schmidt came to America from Germany at the age of 26 years.  He settled in Wisconsin for several years but later moved to Illinois, in which state he had since resided.  Shortly after coming to Illinois he purchased a piece of property at Udina, and took up farming on a small scale.  While engaged in that occupation he opened a small miscellaneous store, which he conducted for ten years.  He was well known by many of the pioneer settlers in this vicinity, coming here when the country was but sparsely settled.
      He is survived by one son, George A. Schmidt, 113 Elm street.
      Services will be held from Wait and Ross undertaking rooms at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, with interment in the Old Soldiers' Reserve at Bluff City.  Rev. Hoefer will conduct the services.

       Casper Schmidt of Udina, Ill., died at the Elgin State hospital yesterday afternoon.
       Mr. Schmidt was a pioneer resident of Udina, having run a grocery store there for the last ten years.   He was born in Germany, 1835, coming to America 22 years ago.   In reaching this country he went directly to Wisconsin where he had lived the rest of his life.
       He is survived by on son, who lives in Elgin.
       The funeral will be held tomorrow from the undertaking rooms of Wait and Ross at 2 o'clock in the afternoon.   Internment at Bluff city cemetery in the Soldiers reserve.

   Buried in the GAR section of the Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin, Ill.
