       Note;
In 1986 a collection of items belonging to Brig. Gen. Fredrick A. Starring was donated to the Elgin Area Hist. Soc.   At that time a description was included with the donation report.   Here I will include my report written in 2018 of each item in read behind the original description from 1986.

Uniform Coat, Long Civil War Officer's - Black Velvet Collar &sleeve cuffs - 16 brass buttons on front; 5 on each sleeve and 4 on the split tail.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 1
Mess Dress Coat with Brig. Gen's. Shoulder Straps with Dress Cording.   Hand sewn button holes in the 'Keyhole" style.   Can find no makers marks.   Black velvet cuffs and tape collar.   Double Breasted with buttons laid out in pairs.   Sleeves are silk lined.   Coat is lined with navy blue drill woven linnen or cotton.

       Uniform Pants, Civil War Officers (go with 86-22-1) 6 button fly.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 2
Officers pants in the Undress style.   There is no cording on the seams, as I am not an expert on Mess Dress uniforms I don't know if this is normal or not.   Buttons are Japaned black with on on the waistband that is NOT hidden.   All seams are hand sewn and done very well.   There are two buttons on each side of hte cuffs on the inside.   There are two hip pockets, this leads me to think that this is a post war item.  There is the standard waist adjustment strap on the back 1 1/2" below the waist.

       Suspenders - Tan Striped   Ass. #86 - 22 - 3
Braces - In the rear they are not crossed but folded and sewn in two parts.   To re-enforce them there is a 1/4" brass staple with a plate facing rearwards.   Front fold is doubled with a complicated double tab slide system.   Straping is a tan and creak stripe.

Hat, Plush, Civil War Officers Dress - Shaped like an Admirals.   Gold Braid on front & back ends, large gold decoration on left side with American Eagle & Sheild, also one button.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 4

Price             6th Ave cor. 20th St.
Size                                     N. Y.
Button holes look machine sewn.   This would make them post war as the button holer wasn't patented until 1866.

Cap, Forage - Kepi Civil War Officer's - Star on front black velvet band with small brass button on either side, decorated with braid.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 6

Cap Forage (Kepi) Civil War - Plain- Button with palm (?) leaf on front - Small "ordnance corps button each side wih string cord tied in front.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 7
This item is missing from the collection.  It may have been returned to the wrong box at some time in the past.   Will continue to look for it.

Epaulet (Pr.) one marked Right, other left - Heavy gold wire braid - single star & button on each.  hinge on each.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 8 & 9
This item is missing from the collection.  It may have been returned to the wrong box at some time in the past.   Will continue to look for it.

       Belt - 1 5/8" wide with brass buckle (Army issue)   Ass. #86 - 22 - 10
Belt with frame buckle.   Holes punched down the length of the belt.   If this is army issue I think it would be post Civil War.

       Collars (10) for uniform coat (86-22-1)   Ass. #86 - 22 - 11-20
Shirt Collars.   There are ten canvas collars and one paper dress collar in the collection.   The canvas collars are printed with F A S on the inside.   Each has button holes on the edge to fix them onto the shirts.

Belt 1 3/4" wide for Uniform coat (86-22-1) has heavy buckle with American Eagle with Branches.   Has 2 7/8" straps with clasps on end - one is 16" long with hook at the top, other is 26" long (for holding sword scabord.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 21
Officers sword belt.   Standard issue in tan.   Front Saddle Scabard clip is missing.   Entire shoulder belt is missing.   Walking clip is still in place on the left side.

Shoulder patches (2) - 1 1/2" x 4 1/4" - Black Velvet backed with leather - heavy gold cord around edge, with single star in center.   Has two string ties on each end.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 22&23
Brig. Gen's. Shoulder Straps, one pair.   Black or navy blue with 3/8" wide cording around the edges.   There are two black shoe strings that look fairly modern on each end.   I assume these were to fix them onto a display of some sort.   There is no wear along the edges that you would find if they had been sewn onto a uniform.

     Cord - 18" - Military Gold for hat   Ass. #86 - 22 - 24
Gold Hat Cord.   This looks like the cord that fits the Kepi (86-22-7)

       Buttons - 6 large U.S. Civil War Uniform on a card.   9 small U.S. Civil War Uniform on a card.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 25 & 26
       Nothing to add to this.

       Chain, 1 3/4 gold link - Small U.S. Uniform Buttons on each end.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 27
       Nothing to add to this.

       Belt, leather - 1 3/4" wide - Large brass buckle.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 28
Belt with frame buckle.   Holes punched down the length of the belt.   If this is army issue I think it would be post Civil War.

       Book - 5 1/2" x 8 1/4" - Hardcover 594 pgs. - Subj. "Revised U.S. Army Regulations - 1863"   Good condition. Has "F. A. Starring, Col. 72nd Ill. Infantry" written on inside front cover.   Ass. #86 - 22 - 33
