Col. Edward Stanford Wilcox

Col. Edward Stanford Wilcox

In 1850 he made an overland trip to California with his brother Calvin who died of Yellow Fever on the return trip the following year.  He married and moved to Missouri where they were vilified as 'Black Abolishionist's' and forced to leave.

LIEUT. E. S. WILCOX.
This favorite officer arrived here on Monday, having been detached to recruit for the 52nd.  There are some 200 of the boys away on furlough, and these are to be looked after and others found to take the vacant places in this honored Regiment.  No better man than "Santie" could be found to do this work.  He has a curious little patch on the back of his coat, a round patch, about an inch in diameter.  Can any one imagine how it came there?
