Notice: Oct. 30, 1861 issue Elgin's Weekly Gazette.
On Dit.-Doct. E.A. Merrifield, of this city, will receive the appointment of Assistant Surgeon of the 58th Regiment Ill. volunteers.  This is a good selection, and Dr. Merrifield will do justice to the medical corps of this city.  Why the medical staff of the different regiments recruited in this vicinity, has had no representitaion from Elgin, is something difficult to understand.  Elgin had done more towards filling up the different regiments than any town of its size in the State; still up to this appointment made by Col. Lynch, it has sent no Surgeon or assistant Surgeon to the war.  The choice of Col. Lynch will meet the hearty approval of the citizens of Elgin and vicinity.

   Enlisted Jan. 25, 1862.

Commissioned Feb. 11, 1862 at Camp Douglas in Chicago.
